The John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge
Covington Kentucky

Location Information:

Designed by and named for civil engineer John A. Roebling, it spans 1,075 feet over the Ohio River. At the time the bridge opened, it was the longest suspension bridge in world. The main cables supporting the deck are made up of 5,180 wires each and were "spun in place". The John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge has spanned the Ohio River connecting Cincinnati, Ohio and Covington, Kentucky since its official opening date of December 1, 1866 (the official opening to traffic was on January 1, 1867). Over 166,000 people walked across the bridge on December 1st and 2nd 1866. The final touches were completed during the next few months and construction officially ended in July of 1867. This location has many subjects to photograph including the suspension bridge (of course) old houses, the Cincinnati skyline, murals on the flood-wall, boats, geese, and more! We are going to publish sample photos from classes, workshops and photo walks in Covington KY later this year but for now a few sample images can be found by clicking here.

Recommended Equipment:

There are so many subjects to photograph at this location that almost any lens will work including wide angle, telephoto, macro, bring your favorites.
If you class/workshop/photo walk has a specific subject such as Portrait Photography, Cityscape Photography or Macro Photography be certain to bring the appropriate lens for the subject matter. Also if our web page for your class/workshop/photo walk has a list of recommended equipment please refer to it.
A tripod and remote shutter release.
Flash.
Polarizing and Graduated Neutral Density filters are good.
For portrait photography workshops reflectors are often helpful.
Flashlight for "special effects" photography and in case it is dark before the class ends.
Ask your instructor to bring a ghost costume if you would like to learn how to take "Ghost Photos".

Attire:

As always please dress for the weather conditions. We usually walk about halfway to the Licking River (less than 1 mile) and up on the suspension bridge to the first tower where there is room to setup tripods (less than 1/2 mile). Some students choose to venture down to the river bank which is down a rocky hill and can be muddy near the river's edge. Boots are a good idea, dress shoes and open toe shoes are a bad idea.
